She became a member of Congress Working Committee in 1959 . She became the president of Indian National Congress . At that time , she was a central minister too in 1965 . Nehru died and Shastriji became the prime minister . When he died unexpectedly , Indira Gandhi became the Prime Minister of India , in 1967 , election , congress got majority and she became the prime minister for the second time . The same scene was repeated in 1971 general election . She continued as the Prime Minster for three terms till 1977 , when the Janata party came to power .
Indira Gandhi was an able and efficient Prime Minister . She tackled the Naga problem , Nihar problem , Assam problem , Nationalisation of Banks , Indo pak war due to Bangladesh , unemployment problem . When the inteernal situation of the country was terrible she started " Emergency " which affected the successful implementation of 20-point programme . There was corruption , political unrest everywhere . So people rejected the congress government .
Indira gandhi fought ceaselessly for the poverty eradication , for the rapid economic progress of the poor and down-trodden , for peaceful rehabilitation . She advocated for the international peace and understanding . She crushed terrorism in punjab through operation Blue star . The poor people , the simple adivasis and untouchables treated her as their mother .
Death Of Indira Gandhi
Operation blue star become expensive for Indira Gandhi . Two sikhs named satwant singh and beant singh shot her dead on October 31 , 1984 . With her death India lost an inspiring and determined politician .
