Introduction

Odisha is studded with temples , laced by holy rivers , graced by holy sprits who have prescribed certain religious customs and traditions , convictions and conventions and to make them acceptable , they have associated them with fairs and festivals , sweets and meat , feast and party , amusement and entertainment . Therefore , Odisha observes many festivals each month , at times two or three festivals in a month , each having a connection with special god or deity , special feast , ritual . All the festivals are arranged during leisure , especially connected with cultivation , observed before or after reaping , sowing . These festivals retard monotony , dullness of life , make life colourful , gay , spirited , inculcate in mind inspiration , enthusiasm for new work . Thus festivals in Odisha serve not only a religious and spiritual order but also serve newness , energy , amusement .

Dasahara in Odisha 

Among the prominent festivals in Odisha , Dasahara or Durga puja is quite conspicuous , observed in the month of Aswina . People worship goddess Durga at Pujamandaps , brillinatly decorated with light , sound system . Goddess Durga ferocious appearance while slaining Mahisasura , looks lovable as well as awful . Every Odia house prepares cakes of various design , handiwork and ingredients . For five days , life becomes charming , entertaining watching melody , pujamandap , worshipping images and wandering freely till late night . 

Diwali In Odisha 

Next to Dasahara , Diwali or Deepavali is another mass festival observed in Odia house to retard ignorance , demonic forces by lighting the lamp of knowledge , worshipping the ancestors , arranging feasts , exploding crackers , inventing ways of delight .

Raja festival in Odisha

Raja festival is equally life forging , pleasure giving , worry retarding in Odisha . It comes in the month of Asadha , heralds rain , brings an end to the scorching heat , brings solace , mental peace . It is observed for three days , each day having its specially like Pahili Raja , Raja Sankranti , Bhumidaha , Basumati bath etc . The maidens wear new garments take betels , play in swings singing brilliant songs from their own mind . Men play Bagudi , ludu , Kabadi , cards while the housewives cook delicious meat curry . Raja overwhelms the whole nation giving profuse amusement . 

Dola Festival 

Dola is another Odia festival observed pompously when the devotees place Radha Krishna in Bimana or Dola ( Chariot ) and carry Dola from house to house , village to village . The simple , god fearing people , remaining awake the whole night , offer their worship to the lords in Dola . The next day , they observe Holi , the festival of colours , throw ' Abira ' at each other delightedly as well as playfully and get themselves entertained .

Shamba Dasami

Samba Dasami is observed in every Odia house with much religious fervour and delight when Odia housewife prepares seven types of cakes , each is delicious , unique because of its taste , flavour and exclusive Odia style of preparation . People worship lord Surya who cured Samba from leprosy .

Gurubar Laxmi Puja 

Margasir Gurabar is dedicated to goddess Laxmi , the goddess of wealth who taught a wise lesson to lord Jagannath and his brother Balabhadra who opposed her going to a Chandaluni's house . The Odia housewives paint the walls , floors with specially made rice liquid . They place goddess Laxmi on a sanctuary and worship her , pray her to give them wealth , cow , gold . They prepare various types of delicasies , unique in taste and flavour and serve to the family members delightedly . 

Conclusion

Besides the above prominent Odia festivals , we also celebrate Rakshi Purnima or Gamha Purnima , Savitri Brata , Bakula Amabasya , Khudurukuni or Mangal Brata , Chitalagi Amabasya , Prathamastami , Pana Sankranti and many others . Each has its own glory , manner of rituals . Each , however , serves a spiritual order as well as entertainment , retarding worries and furries . The Odias bask in such leisurely , but divine activities whenever they get relaxation from cultivation . Odisha has created its own identification in observing its own festivals .
